Championship duo Leeds United & Aston Villa have been rumoured to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow when the transfer window re-opens next month.

The Sun claimed earlier this week that Karl Darlow is a £4 million target for promotion-chasing duo Leeds United and Aston Villa, as both teams require stability and depth in between the sticks.

Leeds have youngster Bailey Peacock-Farrell in goal, whilst Villa have summer signing Orjan Nyland, but the duo have not impressed their highly-vocal supporters.

It is highly likely that a new goalkeeper will be walking through the doors of Elland Road and Villa Park next month, but Newcastle’s backup keeper should not be that man.

Despite winning promotion with the Magpies two seasons ago, Darlow constantly made mistakes for Rafa Benitez’s side, despite playing behind a robust and solid Championship winning defence.

In recent times, Darlow has proven to be error-prone for the north east club, hence why his manager has dropped him to the bench since their return to the promised land.

During Newcastle’s promotion to the Premier League, Darlow kept 13 clean sheets in 34 league matches but he continued to make costly mistakes.

One infamous mistake from the former Nottingham Forest man came during the Toon Army’s 2-1 defeat at Norwich when he miss-kicked the ball whilst coming off his line.

Both Leeds and Villa already have goalkeepers who have come under huge criticism for these weaknesses in their game. The last thing they need in their promotion push is another goalkeeper costing them valuable points.
