Former Tottenham boss says it is up to Mauricio Pochettino to sustain the club’s academy success
Former Tottenham Hotspur head coach Tim Sherwood believes the club face a ‘tough ask’ to sustain their academy success.
Harry Kane is the leading light who has stepped up from the club’s academy to the first team in recent seasons, but he has also helped inspire the likes of Harry Winks and Kyle Walker-Peters too.
Speaking to SkySports’ The Debate (19/9 10pm), Sherwood says current boss Mauricio Pochettino is key to them sustaining their record of bringing young players through.
He said: “Tottenham have produced a lot through the academy. It’s a model they like and I admire it, to continue it is a very tough ask.
“They can if they continue to give young players a chance. The manager likes to play players but to give them a cold start when not seen is big ask.”
Spurs have also given young talents like Dele Alli and Eric Dier regular chances, even though they themselves did not come through the club’s academy.
Expectations have increased on Tottenham for success at the very top level, and this may have altered Pochettino’s view, with the manager deciding to sign Serge Aurier rather than rely on Walker-Peters as a back-up option to Kieran Trippier.
Top talent Marcus Edwards was not involved, although Spurs did include 17-year-old midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe on the bench.
Harry Kane may be a once in a generation talent, but his success will help inspire younger Tottenham talents that they can one day make it.
