It probably hasn’t been the summer transfer window Newcastle United fans would have liked.
In fact, you could probably say the same about last summer when Eddie Howe guided the team into the Champions League.
Yes, Newcastle added players to their squad, but given the platform they were on, they couldn’t enhance or improve their squad to the level they truly wanted.
And now that the Magpies aren’t in Europe, it’s probably even more difficult for them to do business, with the only plus point being the fact that a proven first-team player hasn’t left yet given all the noise leading into the summer.
No Upcoming Fixtures
But that doesn’t mean that rumours haven’t been swirling left, right and centre since the Premier League season ended.
One name that has surprisingly popped up in recent times is Anthony Gordon possibly moving to Liverpool, with suggestions of centre-back Jarell Quansah heading in the other direction.
Tony Cascarino labelled this as ’strange’ and thinks that the Anfield academy product, who had a breakthrough campaign last time out, has a ‘big future’ ahead of him, as he told talkSPORT.
Newcastle are in need of centre-backs given the long-term injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.
They have already signed Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer, but missed out on Tosin Adarabioyo after he decided to join Chelsea.
But Cascarino can’t see a player like Quansah moving to Newcastle as he thinks ‘Liverpool will understand’ what the future lies for the player.

“Strange one, I saw that line yesterday with Quansah maybe a possibility of him moving on (re links with Gordon and Newcastle United),” said Cascarino.
“I think he has still got a chance at Liverpool to be a proper centre-half. He has got a big future and I think Liverpool understand that as well.”

This was only suggested when Gordon’s name popped up, in regards to moving to Anfield, so you can’t really see it happening.
That being said, Quansah is the type of player Howe needs right now because his team suffered many defensive issues last term.

Injuries didn’t help, and they will be without two key men for the start of the new season, but if Newcastle can bring in a player the profile of Quansah, then it will help them a long way.
For the player himself, he was put on standby for England’s Euro 2024 squad and he has every chance of starting alongside Virgil van Dijk next season as Arne Slot aims to write his own chapter in Liverpool’s rich history.
