Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has shared details of Paulo Fonseca’s Tottenham salary.
The journalist claims that his pay packet a fraction of what some other candidates wanted – and he says even a lower wage than he was earning at Roma.
It’s no secret that Fonseca wasn’t Spurs’ first-choice, with some reports even claiming that he was Spurs’ sixth-choice, and going for a lesser-known manager of course means paying a lower salary.
Castles says that Fonseca will earn a net salary of just €2.5m a year.

Castles says that Fonseca is the cheap option for Tottenham, asking for a lot less than many other candidates wanted.
“Fonseca’s salary is a small fraction of what was being asked of some candidates and a small fraction of what Jose Mourinho was paid as coach. He will be on €2.5m (£2.2m) net as a base salary, which is around or slightly below the figure he had at Roma where he was dismissed to be replaced by the manager Daniel Levy dismissed during the week of the League Cup final.”
Good value
While many Tottenham fans would have every right to be up in arms for their club going for the cheaper option, it has to be said that Fonseca does represent good value.
£2.2m a year is peanuts in footballing terms, and to be honest, his CV indicates that he should probably be earning more than that.
Of course, with Spurs’ recent history of sacking managers, Fonseca’s lower salary also means that it wouldn’t cost all that much to let him go if things go awry, but it’s a little early to be thinking about that.
Will Fonseca be as good as someone like Antonio Conte? Time will tell, but one thing is for sure, he’s much cheaper.
