Aguero has been linked with Real Madrid repeatedly in the past week. Are Manchester City just a stepping stone?
La Liga leaders Real Madrid have been casting their greedy eye on Sergio Aguero over recent days, if Spanish newspapers are to be believed.
Their interest has been existent for quite a while now, but is this actually their best chance of signing him?
We say that because at Atletico Madrid, Real’s bitter rivals, the chances of Aguero switching across the Spanish capital were pretty much zero.
This is where our conspiracy theory comes in.
If you were Aguero, and you wanted to move from Atletico to Real, what would you do?
Well firstly you would know for a fact that Atletico were never going to sell to their richer, more successful capital city rivals.
So step one would be to get out of the Vicente Calderon as soon as possible, which he accomplished by switching to Manchester City.
Step two, would be start angling for a move to Real Madrid as soon as possible.
With no political or cross-city rivalries to worry about, the path would be clear.
Except that step two won’t be as easy as it sounds. Real may be interested, and may be willing to engineer a swap with Gonzalo Higuain, but City are not so keen on selling their star man.
If we really buy into our conspiracy theory, we could argue that Aguero never wanted to be at City, and only went to the Etihad as a launching pad for an eventual transfer to Real Madrid, and engineered the whole move with his agent and advisors.
He may get there eventually, if not next season then the year after.
The Argentine may be perfectly happy in Manchester, but the attraction of seeing him line up for Real Madrid alongside Cristiano Ronaldo would create a formidable team. It would be quite something to see them take on Lionel Messi and Barcelona.
His father-in-law Diego Maradona has publicly urged him to seek a transfer back to Spain.
Right now though we must assume Aguero is happy in Manchester- until he admits otherwise, and City will not want to sell him.
But if he starts making noises over the summer and issuing come-and-get-me pleas to Real, this year or next, we will know that he only ever saw his trip to Manchester as a stepping stone in his career.
Do you think Aguero harbours ambitions to play for Real Madrid?
