HITC Sport selects the La Liga player your club should sign: Sheffield Wednesday’s is Daniel Carrico.

Despite their recent run of poor form, promotion to the Premier League remains in Sheffield Wednesday’s hands with eight games left of the regular Championship season.

Win most of those and another few in the play-offs and the Owls will be back in the big time – 17 years since their latest visit.

Such a feat is sure to keep struggling boss Carlos Carvalhal in work, and could make Wednesday’s summer recruitment drive especially exciting.

Having managed at two of Europe’s biggest clubs before arriving at Hillsborough, the Portuguese tactician should have plenty of high-profile contacts ready to tap into.

Joao Moutinho, Rui Patricio (both Sporting CP) and Ricardo Quaresma (Besiktas) have all played under Carvalhal, but it is another of his ex-Sporting contingent, Daniel Carrico, who would perhaps be most realistic.

Some may recall Carrico spending six months at Reading earlier in the decade, before the now 28-year-old returned to the continent with Spanish giants Sevilla.

A central defender or defensive midfielder, Carrico would fill two roles in which Wednesday could do with strengthening, and bring with him the leadership skills he honed during his time as Sporting captain.

Despite being a regular in Sevilla’s side over the past three campaigns, the multiple Europa League winner – who has also appeared four times in the Champions League proper – has struggled for game time since Jorge Sampaoli’s arrival last summer and could be on the move this closed-season, with little over a year to run on his contract.

A reunion with Carvalhal at Wednesday is sure to appeal, but only – one suspects – if the Owls achieve their aims for the campaign.
