Jamie Redknapp has told The Scottish Sun that it is only a matter of time before Rangers manager Steven Gerrard becomes the new Liverpool boss.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has admitted that he was surprised when Gerrard decided to take charge of Rangers instead of focusing on his TV punditry career.

Gerrard, who is a Liverpool legend, was appointed the manager of Rangers in 2018, and Redknapp has backed him to eventually succeed Jurgen Klopp as the Anfield boss.

Redknapp told The Scottish Sun: “I wasn’t sure if Stevie would go into management. It’s a bit like Frank Lampard.

“They’ve both had great careers, won everything, and I could see them just doing punditry, take the easy option. But they haven’t, they’ve gone in at the sharp end.

“Stevie is in Scotland and doing well. It’s not easy because Celtic are so strong. But Stevie has got it, you can see that.

“I think a few years at Rangers, and as long as he doesn’t make too many mistakes, it’s only a question of time before he manages Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp decides to go.”

Winning at Rangers

Gerrard has done well during his time at Rangers so far, but the Liverpool legend needs to stop Celtic from winning the Scottish Premiership title next season.

The Hoops have won the league title in Scotland for the past nine seasons, and the Glasgow giants will be determined to make it nine in a row in 2020-21.

True, it is hard to compete with Celtic – who have arguably the strongest team in Scotland – but Gerrard has to find a way to stop Neil Lennon’s side next season.
