Lucas Torreira leaving Arsenal is a matter of time.
It has been abundantly clear for some time that the Uruguay international had no future under Mikel Arteta.
He has been heavily linked with a return to Italy, from where he joined the Gunners for £27 million four years ago.
But now the pint-sized midfielder is set for a transfer to Galatasaray in Turkey, as suggested by his agent this week.
And Tuttomercatoweb has reported that a £5.8 million departure from North London is now only ‘one step away’, giving the club quite a substantial loss on their initial investment, particularly after a stellar first season suggested that Arsenal could make a handsome profit on the player.
Lucas Torreira leaving Arsenal makes complete sense.
The former Sampdoria terrier will want to make his nation’s World Cup squad in a few months and without regular football in Europe, that’s impossible.
Labelled ‘quality‘ by Unai Emery during a sensational first season at the Emirates Stadium, Torreira has become increasingly inconsistent, resulting in Arteta not having any long-term plan for him at the Gunners.
There’s definitely a very talented footballer in there but, unfortunately, he is no longer capable of performing to the standard that Arteta deems sufficient.
The 26-year-old has 63 Premier League appearances under his belt and barring a massive shock at this stage, he won’t be getting a 64th.
Arsenal kick off their Premier League campaign with a visit to Crystal Palace tonight.
