‘A problem’: Peter Schmeichel sounds Liverpool warning after Carragher’s transfer plea

Peter Schmeichel told CBS Sport on Paramount+ (14/04/21 at 10:20 pm) that it’s ‘very important’ that Liverpool qualify for the Champions League if they want to attract the best players in the summer.

Jamie Carragher had first stated that Liverpool, who were knocked out by Real Madrid last night, need to bring in three players when the summer transfer window re-opens.

Ozan Kabak, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota have been Liverpool’s biggest purchasers during their last two windows and after an injury-hit campaign, they have to go again.

A centre-back, Gini Wijnaldum replacement and someone who can start in the front three is what Liverpool need, according to Carragher.

“It’s imperative that Liverpool get into the Champions League next season, in terms of revenue and attracting players,” said Carragher. “Right now, Liverpool need three players right down the spine.

“They need a centre-back to play. A midfield player to replace Wijnaldum, who is moving. And someone to play, week in and week out as part of the front three if they want to match Manchester City next season.”

Schmeichel added: “I think that’s a really, really good point you are making there, in terms of attracting players if you need to make adjustments, we have seen that with Manchester United.

“It’s been a problem. The inconsistency of not qualifying for the Champions League. The players, the top players who they really, really want. They are not choosing clubs that might be in the CL the year after. They want to be in the CL now.

“That’s why it’s very important that Liverpool climb up the table and finish in the top four.”

Whilst Liverpool have splashed the cash on players during Jurgen Klopp’s reign, they don’t do in the style of a Manchester United, Chelsea or Manchester City.

But they may have to change their tune a little this summer.

The obvious names out there are Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, both of whom would transform this Liverpool side, but would Liverpool be willing to push the boat out for their talents?
