Liverpool U-23 boss Barry Lewtas has lauded 18-year-old goalkeeper Harvey Davies’ quality and potential after his performance against Arsenal.
Speaking to the Athletic, the Merseyside youth coach believes the teenage shot-stopper has all the qualities to succeed as a keeper. Davies started between the sticks as Liverpool claimed a huge 3-0 win over the Gunners.
The youngster is highly rated at Anfield and could one day be a part of the first team. However, competition in the goalkeeper position is tough with Davies already having to beat out the likes of Jakub Ojrzynski and Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher.
Indeed, the Republic of Ireland keeper started last weekend against Watford with Alisson Becker unavailable due to his involvement with Brazil in the international break. But for Lewtas, Davies has the quality to make it to the top.
The Liverpool coach said: “He is a young goalkeeper but really accomplished with his feet.” Lewtas added: “He’s a presence, isn’t he? He’s a big lad. He looks like a goalkeeper.”
With Davies impressing at U-23 level and becoming the club’s number one for Premier League 2 football, there’s a strong chance that the youngster could leave Liverpool on loan.
Loan move best decision for Davies at Liverpool
And January should be an opportunity for the teenager to secure a move to a senior club. Indeed, we have seen how beneficial loans can be for young players. Especially goalkeepers, who can improve hugely if they play first-team football from an early age.
With Liverpool having plenty of success stories from academy players going out on loan, Davies could well be the next name to make the leap from the U-23s to regular senior football at a club in the English professional pyramid.
