Jermain Defoe and Karen Carney have spoken about how a player like Leicester City playmaker James Maddison would improve Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.
The former Sunderland striker thinks that a player like Callum Wilson, who scored during Newcastle’s 1-1 draw at West Ham United, would get ‘two or three chances’ like the one he scored from on Saturday, per game.
Whilst former England international Karen Carney understood what Anthony Gordon is going to bring to the table, but thinks that ‘something different’ is needed and Maddison would provide that.
After 15 Premier League games, Maddison has an impressive eight goals and four assists to his name.
He is hitting the peak of his powers and his form during the past two seasons was a big reason why he made the cut for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
But could the all-action midfielder be on the move in the summer? Well, he was bigged up about possibly improving Newcastle by Karen Carney and Jermain Defoe, as they told Premier League Productions.
“I know they have Gordon, but it’s that creative midfielder (that’s needed) to keep giving them those chances,” said Carney. “I watch a lot of Newcastle. A lot of their attacking prowess is winning it back off the opposition and their mistakes, rather than carving an opening up.
“I think that might be the difference to give Callum Wilson and the attacking players a little bit more of that. They were linked with Maddison, I know they have brought Gordon in. But that type of creative player and someone who can give you something different.”
Defoe added: “When you have a player like that, then as a forward you know, if your movement is good, then you might get two or three chances, especially at home. If you take two of those chances.
“He (Wilson) actually said there that is one of the first times all season he has had a ball played through to him like that – so, that’s interesting.”
IS MADDISON ON THE MOVE?
In recent times, Leicester have won the FA Cup and they have been in Europe. But during this current campaign, because of issues out of Brendan Rodgers’ control, they have gone backwards.
A player like Maddison needs to be playing in Europe now, and especially in his current form, therefore it wouldn’t be a surprise if he heads for the exit door in the summer.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have got a mention, but if Newcastle were to secure Champions League football, then if he wants regular minutes, a move for the £60 million star to St James’ Park wouldn’t be a bad idea.
