Many athletes who play other sports could have been professional golfers.

Stephen Curry and Tony Romo are two of the best-known elite golfers in sports, and both superstars have played in professional events. It’s widely thought that if either had opted to play golf instead of basketball or football, then they’d have been on the PGA Tour.

A lot of that is because of their natural athleticism. Romo, Curry, and many other athletes could have turned their hands to plenty of sports due to their sporting talent. But it’s quite another thing to have the right mind for golf.

One man who definitely does is Ryan Succop. Not only does the former NFL kicker have an incredible golf handicap of +2.6, he also once caddied on the Web.com tour, now the Korn Ferry Tour.

Why Ryan Succop once caddied for Wesley Bryan on the Web.com tour

In 2016, the then-Tennessee Titans kicker Succop caddied for former PGA Tour winner turned YouTuber Wesley Bryan at the Nashville Golf Open at the Nashville Golf & Athletic Club. Succop and Bryan became friends when the two were at South Carolina together, and they’ve remained close since.

Bryan told Succop that he was there to carry the clubs and provide entertainment to his friend, and leave the golf up to Bryan.

The kicker said, “I asked him: ‘Are you going to want me to give yardages and help you read putts?’ And he said, ‘You’re there to carry the bag and just have good conversation. But when it comes to golf, just shut up.’

“So I am there to carry his bag and keep the conversation light. That will be my job. … He knows what he is doing.”

When asked how much money he’d expect to take home from the event, he joked, “I think 50 percent is fair. He might be swinging the clubs, but that bag is heavy and it’s going to be hot.

“So I think we’ll start at 50 percent and go from there. But really, I think that Wesley will not pay me, because I won’t let him. I just hope he does well.”

How Wesley Bryan got on with Ryan Succop as his caddie

Surprisingly, Bryan and Succop did incredibly well together! Bryan made headlines in the opening round by shooting a 9-under-par 63 at the Nashville Golf & Athletic Club.

During that opening 63, he surged into the lead by carding six consecutive birdies to close out his round, setting a new course record in the process, so Succop can take pride in being a part of that record.

After his blistering start, he finished the tournament at 10-under-par, resulting in a T9 finish.

Bryan took home $13,200, which may not seem like a massive sum compared to today’s PGA Tour purses, it was a solid payout for a top-10 finish on the Web.com Tour at the time.
