Southampton were reportedly interested in signing the Genk defender last month.

Joakim Maehle sat down for an exclusive interview with Belgian publication Het Belang van Limburg, and discussed his failed to move to Southampton on transfer deadline day.
The Saints were prepared to pay £10 million in order to acquire the 21-year-old’s services, according to a report from the Daily Mail, but in the end, Belgian outfit Genk refused to sell one of their prized assets.
Southampton failed to sign anyone during the January transfer window in the end, but it certainly wasn’t through a lack of trying.
Maehle spoke exclusively to Belgian publication Het Belang van Limburg, and admitted that a move to St Mary’s actually did interest him:
“I’m not going to say that I wasn’t interested. This was a nice proposal from a big club from a top competition. But at the same time I have full understanding of Genk’s point of view. They have also been very clear from the beginning.”
He was then asked whether he sees himself playing in the Premier League at some point in the near future:

“We will see that. If I keep on performing, this opportunity definitely needs to happen again.”
The Dane certainly has a bright future ahead of him in the game, and following his recent comments, Southampton will surely go back in for the right-back at some point in the future.
Whether Genk will entertain the idea of selling, however, is another matter entirely.
