Speaking on the Ornstein & Chapman Podcast, Jack Pitt-Brooke has claimed that he’s heard Roberto Martinez’s name mentioned in connection with the Tottenham job.
Pitt-Brooke is the Spurs correspondent for The Athletic, so his word counts for a lot on this matter.
Martinez is currently the manager of Belgium, but Pitt-Brooke says that he’d fancy a return to club management after this summer’s Euros.
“Roberto Martinez is a name that I’ve heard in connection with this job. Of course, he’s the manager of Belgium at the moment, but I imagine he’d fancy a return to club football after the Euros,” Pitt-Brooke said.
“I’m a big fan of Martinez, I think he’d do a really good job, he plays football the right way and he seems to have a decent track record with young players, so in that sense I think he’d tick all of the boxes, but I’m not sure all Spurs fans would agree with me.”
This is certainly an interesting update.
Martinez is a quality manager. After all, he took Belgium to the World Cup semi-finals, but it’s been a long time since we’ve seen him compete at club level.
The last time we saw Martinez in England he was being sacked by Everton, so a move to Spurs would be something of a step up from that point.
As Pitt-Brooke says, he plays football the right way, and if he came to Spurs he would certainly be an entertaining appointment if nothing else.
