Tottenham were made to work hard by Burnley in the Premier League last night. It seemed like the game would end without any goals, but Harry Kane and Son Heung-min combined yet again to give Spurs the win.
Jose Mourinho’s side are now fifth in the table, just two points behind league leaders Everton. Tottenham look extremely good at the moment and many fans have been dreaming about a potential title challenge this season.
The Spurs boss dismissed the thought of competing for the title in his post-match press conference yesterday. (Football London) However, Mourinho is a serial winner, and with the likes of Kane, Son and Gareth Bale at his disposal, they have every chance to have a big say in the title race.
Ex-Spurs boss Tim Sherwood spoke on Matchday Live on Optus Sport after the game yesterday. He raved about his former side’s attack, but he is wary about their defenders, especially Davinson Sanchez.
He said: “They’ve got so much talent in forward areas, he needs to find that solid base behind. He seems to like Eric Dier out of those centre-backs, Alderweireld is the best partner for him, a calming influence. Davinson Sanchez is a mistake waiting to happen.”
“What they have to do to challenge is keep Son fit and keep Kane fit, they haven’t done that for the last few seasons, they always miss one or two over the period. They’re so reliant on these two players. It is not about the team. It is about solid players behind the front three.”
“They could have easily lost that game tonight and everyone would say ‘its Spursy, it’s what they do. But they haven’t, they grinded it out and won, so that will give them the confidence.”
Sanchez, a £42 million signing by Pochettino in 2017, (Telegraph) has had his troubles at the back. He scored an own goal against West Ham in the game where Spurs capitulated after a 3-0 lead. He wasn’t even in the squad at Burnley last night, and it is likely that he will be away from the Premier League starting XI for some time.
Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld are clearly Mourinho’s first-choice defenders at the back. The duo played well last night and helped Tottenham get their first clean sheet in the league this season.
Mourinho will be counting on the two to keep things quiet at the back in the coming games. If they can do that, Spurs will win more often than not, especially if Kane and Son continue their incredible partnership up top for the rest of this season.
