Speaking to Off The Ball, Mark Lawrenson has been discussing Liverpool’s best XI and Joe Gomez’s role in the team.

With defensive injuries stacking up, Gomez has been starting at centre-half as of late for the Reds, but Lawrenson hasn’t been impressed by what he’s seen from the England international.

Indeed, the pundit says that Gomez does have some issues when it comes to concentration, stating that he makes a mistake a game.

Lawrenson fully expects Gomez to be dropped in favour of Ibrahima Konate when the Frenchman is back from injury.

Konate will start when he’s back

Lawrenson gave his verdict on the Reds’ centre-back dilemma.

“I think as soon as Konate is fit he slots back in. Joe Gomez has done ok, but he generally makes a mistake a game. He lacks concentration at times, there’s no shortage of ability, but that seems to happen with him, so Konate would be in and probably Thiago would be in the team,” Lawrenson said.

Need to be the best

Joe Gomez has been fine for Liverpool lately, but as Lawrenson says, he can have spells during games where he just doesn’t look at it.

When you’re in a team like this with such high demands, that just isn’t good enough, and after dropping so many points already this season, the Reds can’t afford any more mistakes going forwards.

Konate has proven over the past 18 months that he does have what it takes to be the Merseyside club’s starting centre-back on a weekly basis, and once he’s back from injury, he should slot straight back into this XI.
