Cork City goalkeeper and Newcastle United target David Harrington could still be set for an imminent move to a ‘massive club’ in Premier League giants Everton, manager Colin Healy tells the Echo Live.
The transfer window might have closed but that does not mean Everton’s recruitment department can pack up their notebooks and head for the beach.
Harrington, one of the brightest young talents in Irish football, is already closing in on a deal that could see him become Everton’s first new signing of 2023. The Toffees have submitted a nominal £43,000 bid for a 22-year-old who will be out of contract in a matter of weeks. Harrington has even travelled to England for talks with Toffees boss Frank Lampard (Irish Examiner).
Healy insists that ‘nothing’ has been agreed so far. But the Cork City boss knows that this is an opportunity too good to turn down.
Are Everton beating Newcastle United to David Harrington?
“We will wait and see what happens over the next few days,” Healy says. “He’s a young lad. He’s done very, very well for himself, he’s got a big future in the game. It can be difficult when you’re a young lad. You have got that pressure and you are linked with Everton.
“Listen they’re a massive club, they are. People don’t realise how big they are. So let’s see what happens over the next few days with it.
“If he stays with us then great. If he does go at the end of the year or something like that, we will wish him the best. But he will be with us until the end of the season (in November) anyway.”
Cork’s number 13 has made 27 league appearances this season, keeping 14 clean sheets. Newcastle United have also been keeping tabs on Harrington; the 22-year-old fitting into the Magpies’ model of signing talented, hungry young players with plenty of re-sale potential.
