As Paul Lambert prepares to take the helm at Molineux, it’s time to look back on Mick McCarthy’s time at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Despite leaving more than four years ago, fans still clamour for the days of Mick McCarthy and that is saying something. During his six years at the club, Wolverhampton Wanderers enjoyed one of their most successful periods in recent history. A promotion to the Premier League and three straight years in the top flight was something that supporters could not have dreamed of a few years prior.
It took a few years for things to get going after the Englishman was appointed in 2006, with a number of seasons seeing Wolves miss out on the play-offs by either a goal or a point.
The close calls were frustrating to say the least, but McCarthy was building a team made up of lower league signings, free transfers and youth players that were proving to be an absolute revelation.

Upon their eventual promotion, McCarthy was able to improve upon his previous failures in the Prem by grinding out results with Wolves that just about kept them up on two different occasions.
The circumstances that led to his dismissal were odd to say the least, with the knee jerk reaction coming after a humiliating 5-1 defeat against bitter rivals West Bromwich Albion. Many fans were calling for his head, but given the appointments that followed it seems as if McCarthy should have been the man to try and turn things round.
Having been through a parade of managers in the last four years, Wolves are still searching for someone who can lead them towards success as well and as consistently as McCarthy did.
