Just over two years ago Clark’s departure from Birmingham City was a big turning point for the club.

Kilmarnock manager Lee Clark

Lee Clark’s tenure at Birmingham City always seemed destined for disaster for one reason or another. After his sacking at Huddersfield he took on the job at St. Andrew’s, and he never seemed to quite be the best fit for the Midlands side.

Sure, he masterminded a final-day escape against Bolton Wanderers that kept them up, but in reality a team of the Blues’ stature should never really have been in a relegation battle in the first place.

His eventual sacking just over two years ago seemed evident, following a stint that made him statistically the worst manager at the club in over a quarter of a century.

What people did not know is what a difference the decision would make for not only Clark, but also the man who succeeded him at the helm.

Birmingham manager Gary Rowett before the match

Gary Rowett had already carved out a great name for himself at Burton Albion, and upon taking the Birmingham job he knew there was alot of work to be done.

Now, all this time later, we can see that Rowett has made the changes and alterations necessary to once again turn the Blues into a team capable of challenging for promotion.

On the other hand, Clark has gone from failure to failure, with Blackpool being the next poisoned chalice he took on before going to Kilmarnock where he is currently struggling to make an impact.

There have been many bad decisions at St. Andrew’s over the years, but looking back it is evident that this was a good and vital one.
