Only days remain until the January transfer window opens, and despite Newcastle’s struggles, their fans were in a pretty humorous mood yesterday regarding all the money they will be able to spend.
Prior to Newcastle’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Monday night, a supporter held up a banner at St James’ Park seemingly asking for Cristiano Ronaldo to join the club.
Sky presenter Dave Jones jokingly reacted to the banner by saying ‘you never know’, as he told Sky Sports and you can see below.
“It’s St James’ Park for us and they are looking forward to the opening of the transfer window,” said Jones.
“That might even be a little far-fetched. (But) you never know.”
Of course, no Ronaldo’s or Messi’s are going to be putting on the Newcastle shirt, but this is a crucial month awaiting those in the North East.
Whilst Eddie Howe will understand that he still has to get the best out of the current crop of players he has at his disposal, he still needs help and quickly.
Newcastle’s inability to keep clean sheets, keep things simple and cut out the mistakes has well and truly hurt them this season.
Given their current situation, many have asked just how far they can push with the money they have at their disposal.
Whilst Newcastle can lay down the red carpet for any player in the world, it’s going to take a lot more than to persuade a player to join a relegation battle.
That’s where the loan market might become useful for the Saudi-led ownership of the club because it’s probably their best bet.
Perhaps a certain teammate of Ronaldo’s could be one of the answers and that’s Jesse Lingard.
The goalscoring midfielder was left out of the matchday squad that faced Newcastle, as the signs suggest that he could be heading for the Old Trafford exit door.
