Danny Murphy told talkSPORT that Gini Wijnaldum may be feeling ‘a little bit edged out’ amid rumours that he is going to leave Liverpool.

The Mirror have claimed that Wijnaldum will leave Liverpool at the end of the season after the 75k-a-week technician was seduced by Barcelona’s advances.

With Dutch legend and his former national boss, Ronald Koeman, walking the touchlines at Nou Camp, it’s understandable why Wijnaldum would want to swap one of England’s giants for Spain’s.

Former Reds midfielder Murphy shared his thoughts on the Wijnaldum situation and admitted that he understands why he would want to leave.

“I understand it more being away from growing up being a Liverpool fan, Liverpool player and the kind of bubble where you expect ‘why would he want to leave? Liverpool won the league and Champions League two seasons ago,” said Murphy.

“He’s 30-years-old. The manager of Barcelona was his national manager, who he gets on with really, really well. We don’t know his aspirations and dreams as a young player.

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

“In Holland, for example, there are a lot of players who looked up to the likes of Johan Cruyff and Koeman. And maybe Barcelona is a dream he has always had.

“Maybe he feels at Liverpool with some of the signings that he’s been a little bit edged out. That hasn’t shown in terms of the selection. He always seems to be in Klopp’s best team. I think he has done a terrific job for Liverpool and if he was to leave then Liverpool fans will be thankful rather than critical of him leaving.”

Whilst Liverpool don’t want to lose Wijnaldum, they will feel they have players in the background who can take his place.

Curtis Jones, albeit he has hit some bad form, has taken his game to another level this season and his potential is ready to explode.

Plus, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain now has the chance to put all his injury problems behind him and become a regular in that XI.
