Reports linking Everton with a move for Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret should come as no surprise.

Since taking over at Goodison Park in December 2019, Carlo Ancelotti has brought in James Rodriguez and Allan while allegedly expressing an interest in Isco, Arkadiusz Milik and Kalidou Koulibaly.

In short, if you’ve played for Ancelotti before you’ll probably be linked with the Merseyside giants at some point.

And with Jordan Pickford as erratic as ever between the sticks, it felt only a matter of time before Meret emerged as a potential replacement for the England number one at Goodison Park.

Ancelotti was Napoli manager when Meret completed his £32 million move from Udinese in summer 2018.

And, according to Il Napoli Online, Everton will be first in line if the Italy international leads a summer exodus from a Partenopei side facing the prospect of another season without Champions League football.

“He is a great talent. Today he showed what he can do,” Ancelotti said in December 2018 after Meret’s heroic performance secured a 1-0 victory over SPAL.

“He truly is a special goalkeeper.”

The concern for Everton, however, is Meret’s development has stalled in the past few seasons, one of Europe’s most promising young shot-stoppers losing his place in Napoli’s XI after a series of high-profile errors.

Sounds worryingly familiar, doesn’t it?
