Gaston Silva is backing fellow Uruguay international Nahitan Nandez to join a “great club” this summer with Leeds United hoping to take the midfielder to the Premier League, speaking to Calciomercato.

Thanks to Cagliari’s outspoken president, Leeds’ interest in an all-action central midfielder is public knowledge these days.

Speaking after the close of the 2020 summer transfer window, Tommaso Giulini admitted the West Yorkshire giants had made a move for Nandez and striker Giovanni Simeone.

Cagliari, however, were never going to sell two key players with so little time to find a replacement.

But as Leeds renew their interest in a long-time transfer target with three months of this window remaining, it seems Marcelo Bielsa’s entertainers have learned from that mistake (Cento Trentuno)

Leeds, however, will face competition from a West Ham side who, with European qualification under their belt, suddenly look a more alluring option for players hoping to test themselves in England (Corriere dello Sport).

It’s not certain, at this stage, where Nandez will be plying his trade in 2021/22.

Fellow Uruguay international Silva, however, will be among the first to congratulate his compatriot should a big-money departure from Sardinia come to fruition at last.

“I know Nahitan very well. I have spent a lot of time with him in the national team. He is a great player, he has done very well,” says Silva, who plays in Spain with Huesca.

“He settled in right away and if he really has the opportunity to go to a great club, I am convinced he will continue to do very well.”

Leeds failed with a bid in the region of £22.5 million for Nandez last year, with Cagliari demanding closer to £30 million.

Serie A champions Inter Milan have also been linked but the Nerazzurri’s dire financial situation makes a prospective switch to the San Siro something of a non-starter (FC Inter News).
