Dundee United are interested in signing Celtic winger Jonny Hayes when he becomes a free agent at the end of this month, Tangerines coach Robbie Nielson has told the BBC’s Sportsound Podcast.
While the veteran wideman might never have been the most popular player to wear the green and white Hoops since the turn of the century, no one can doubt his importance to a Celtic side who continue to dominate the Scottish football landscape.
Hayes made 26 appearances in all competitions as Neil Lennon’s side cruised to a ninth successive Premiership title, even featuring at left-back when required.
And with the former Aberdeen talisman set to become available on July 1, the top-flight newcomers would jump at the chance to bring him to Tannadice.
“We obviously know Jonny, he’s been a great player over the years,” Dundee United boss Neilson admits, while also confirming his interest in the prolific Dunfermline striker Kevin Nisbet.

“(Hayes) is one that we’ve spoken about. But again, financially we don’t know where we are.”
A four-time Republic of Ireland international who cost Celtic £1.3 million in the summer of 2017, Hayes is just one experienced operator who will leave the Premiership champions on a free transfer next month.
Centre-back Jozo Simunovic is also out of the door.
Though, with Hellas Verona’s Pawel Dawidowicz lined up as a £1.4 million replacement (Herald), Simunovic could be replaced sooner rather than later.
