The phrase ‘barking up the wrong tree’ comes to mind with reports today claiming that Rangers have made a bid to bring Sekou Gassama to Ibrox.

According to TMW, the Premiership giants have offered £2.5 million for a forward who has scored nine goals during a loan spell at Spanish second tier outfit Fuenlabrada this season.

But while the chance to return one of the most historic clubs in European football to what many a Rangers fan would deem their ‘rightful’ place at the top of the Scottish game, Gassama does not sound like a player in search of a fresh start.

Speaking to Cadena Ser earlier this week, the late-blooming 25-year-old made it clear that he has one thing on his mind – forcing his way into the starting XI of parent club Real Valladolid.

“I have a great dream – to play at Real Valladolid next season,” says Gassama, who returned for a second spell at the Madrid-based club in January.

“But first I have to prove it in Fuenlabrada.

“Hopefully everything will turn out well. When I received the call from Real Valladolid (five months ago) it was very difficult to say no.”

Barring a remarkable collapse, a Valladolid side owned by Brazilian legend Ronaldo will be donning their rather garish purple and white kits in La Liga next season.

They are currently eight points above the drop zone with survival all-but secured.

Of course, there is little Gassama can do if Valladolid accept the £2.5 million offer put on the table by Rangers.

But considering that no one in Sergio Gonzalez’s squad has more than six goals in 2019/20, selling the impressive and improving Gassama would be an odd decision.
