Morecambe manager Derek Adams can see the positives in reports linking Rangers with League Two hotshot Carlos Mendes Gomes, as he told the Visitor.

If you had told Shrimpers supporters at the start of the season that they’d still be in the thick of the promotion picture by mid-April, you would have been laughed out of town.

For Morecambe fans used to a relegation battle at this stage of proceedings, the table must make for rather surreal viewing.

Adams’ high-flying side are fourth as it stands and, in the shape of one-time Atletico Madrid youngster Mendes Gomes, they also have one of the form players in the division.

Another goal in the 4-1 midweek thrashing of Scunthorpe United means the tricky forward now has 13 to his name in 2020/21.

According to the Scottish Sun, Steven Gerrard’s Rangers have been in touch regarding a deal that could see Mendes Gomes go from the fourth-tier to the Champions League in the blink of an eye.

The Senegalese-born Spaniard will be a free agent in a matter of weeks, although Morecambe boss Adams is not panicking just yet.

“It’s not beneficial for me, the club or Carlos to say what the situation is but I’m very comfortable with it as I’ve said all along. Until there’s a bid put in for any of our players, speculation is all it is,” said the straight-talking Scot.

“(The speculation) is a good thing to have though. If other clubs are being linked with your players, it means something positive must be happening.

“Carlos is a fantastic boy, you can tell that by his work ethic in training and in games. You could see that on Tuesday with the goal he scored and his overall performance that night.”

The versatile Mendes Gomes has made the majority of his appearances on the left flank at Morecambe. Could Rangers see the 22-year-old as competition for Ryan Kent out wide?
