Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes Edinson Cavani would have been a good addition to Jurgen Klopp’s frontline after the Uruguay international joined bitter rivals Manchester United instead.
There is not much this Premier League-winning squad is lacking.
Klopp has arguably the two finest full-backs in world football at his disposal, not to mention a genuinely elite-level centre-half and goalkeeper.
Then there is a midfield full of energy and drive, and a forward-line that would give even a peak-era Alan Hansen nightmares.
But if there is one thing Liverpool don’t have, it’s a classic number nine, a penalty-box poacher in the Cavani mould.
Divock Origi can only dine off those Champions League heroics for so long and, while Diogo Jota did an excellent impression of a centre-forward with a stunning hat-trick in Bergamo, the Portugal international is more of a winger than a striker.
“Edinson Cavani is a good option coming off the bench for any team,” Nicol, a four-time First Division champion from 1984 to 1990, told ESPN FC when asked if Liverpool should have signed PSG’s all-time record goal-scorer.

“I wouldn’t have had a problem if Liverpool had signed Cavani for coming off the bench with 20 minutes to go.”
Only two players have scored more goals than Cavani since he made his European debut with Palermo back in 2006/07, and there are no prizes for guessing that the mystery duo are named Lionel and Cristiano.
But it remains to be seen if, at the age of 33, United’s £210,000-a-week marquee signing can maintain those impeccable standards in a whole new league.
Cavani scored his first Premier League goal in the 3-1 win at Everton prior to the international break.
