Arsenal’s hunt for on-pitch silverware goes on for another season, but ironically that is just where they have won their latest award.
Looking at the pristine glowing playing surface last night ahead of their clash with Wigan Athletic, it was no surprise to learn Arsenal have won an award for it.
The Premier League announced earlier in the day that Arsenal groundsman Paul Ashcroft has been chosen as the ‘2012 Groundsman of the Year.’
High praise indeed, and we are not being sarcastic here, for any one to win in award in their chosen profession is a worthy achievement.
Arsenal have long been the standard-bearer for pitches in the Premier League, having a flawless playing surface at Highbury continuing that since moving to the Emirates Stadium.
It isn’t just in the spring and summer months either, the club have been successful in keeping their pitch in tip-top condition through the harshest of Winter months.
It is no surprise that Arsenal’s passing football thrives on such a surface, and no shock that Arsene Wenger was so incensed when he saw the state of the San Siro pitch in February.
Is it a coincidence that Arsenal’s worst Champions League defeat in recent memory came on such an abominable playing surface?
It is not the trophy supporters wanted this season- but it remains an achievement to be proud of all the same.
