Speaking on Vibe With Five, Danny Murphy has been discussing Cody Gakpo after Liverpool seemingly clinched a deal to sign the Dutch attacker.
The PSV star is set to join the Reds. The Eredivisie club have already announced a deal, and all that is left to do is to dot the Ts and cross the Is.
This story broke on Boxing Day, and to say that it took people by surprise would be an understatement.
Indeed, it seemed for all the world that Gakpo was set for Manchester United, but Liverpool have swooped in and nicked this one.
It’s not just fans who were caught off-guard by this move either, according to Murphy even staff at the club were surprise with Murphy stating that one of the physios couldn’t believe that this transfer was happening.

Gakpo shocked everyone
Murphy shared what the physio has been saying to him.
“I’m really excited by it. It’s what we need now, especially with the injuries to Jota and Diaz. I’m actually shocked still. I spoke to a friend of mine at Liverpool today who couldn’t believe it. A friend of mine, a physio there, and he couldn’t believe he was coming in. It’s just a wonderful signing at a time when Liverpool need a little boost,” Murphy said.
Under wraps
This goes to show just why this move wasn’t leaked prior to the announcement on Boxing Day – staff simply didn’t know.
Journalist’s sources are usually these kinds of figures; physios, coaches, club secretaries, etc. But even they were kept in the dark about the Gakpo deal it would seem.
Liverpool have proven time and time again that they have the ability to do these deals without anything leaking in the press, so don’t be surprise if there are one or two more tricks up their sleeve in January.
