Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, David Seaman has been dissecting England’s performance against Hungary earlier this week.

England failed to beat Hungary on Tuesday. They were held to a 1-1 draw and in all honesty, they struggled at Wembley.

As is so often the case, the midfield battle was key in this game, but sadly for the Three Lions, Declan Rice wasn’t able to get the better of the Hungarians, and it’s fair to say he was missing Kalvin Phillips alongside him.

Seaman noted that he kept noticed that Rice was consistently shouting about the lack of help he had in the midfield.

What’s been said?

Seaman was speaking about the midfield.

“What’s happened with Phillips, is he injured? I think that showed how much we missed him, because him and Declan Rice are the pillar in midfield,” Seaman said.

“They look after everything, they look after each other as well. There was a few times where you’d see Declan Rice shouting around that he had nobody around him to help him. I think that’s where Phillips comes in really well.”

Point proven

Gareth Southgate wanted to experiment in this game against Hungary and it seems as though a point has been proven.

So many fans had been calling for Southgate to play a more attacking style, but this match showed just how important the two holding midfielders are in his team.

Phillips and Rice were brilliant at the Euros, and while everyone would love to see England play in a more attacking way, sometimes you have to go with substance over style.
