‘A dream’: Liverpool sensation Mohamed Salah almost signed for Newcastle United

Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah’s Premier League adventure could have been very different.

Liverpool hit the jackpot last summer when they signed Mohamed Salah from Roma.

The Egyptian has scored 28 goals in 30 games, lighting up the Premier League and ensuring the sale of Coutinho has barely been felt at all.

This is Salah’s second attempt at cracking the Premier League after a spell with Chelsea in 2014.

But his big break in England could have come much earlier, with Newcastle United.

Salah was wanted by Newcastle back in 2011, while he was playing for Egyptian side Arab Contractors.

Salah admitted he wanted to come to Newcastle, telling news agency Ahram Online: “Newcastle will soon make an official offer to sign me for one season. I don’t think Contractors will refuse to let me play in the English Premier League.

“It’s a dream for any player to play in one of the strongest league competitions in the world.”

For reasons unclear at the time, the deal fell through.

Egyptian football website King Fut later claimed it was because Newcastle would not pay a £500,000 loan fee for the season.

The failure to land Salah certainly appears to have been a very costly mistake.

He signed with Swiss side Basel and made an immediate impact, before playing for Chelsea, Fiorentina and now Liverpool.

Salah described the potential switch as a dream at the time, but now it is up to Newcastle fans to ‘dream’ how their journey could have panned out had they managed to sign the Premier League’s best player.
