Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy believes Tottenham Hotspur are now winning games despite not being at their best after they were drawn up against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

The north London club will take on the current Bundesliga leaders in the last 16 of Europe’s biggest cup competition after being knocked out at this very stage last season by Italian giants Juventus.

Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping his side can better their results from the previous campaign and progress through to the quarter-finals, as they aim to win their first trophy under their highly-rated boss.

Murphy, who played at White Hart Lane during the mid-noughties, expressed his excitement at Tottenham’s Champions League draw as he pointed towards the positive change in their game compared to previous seasons.

“Spurs, Dortmund excites me,” Murphy told Jim White’s talkSPORT show on 17/12/2018 at 12:00 pm. “I think that will be a high intensity, all guns blazing game. I have only seen Dortmund twice this season and they were super impressive when I watched them.

“But Tottenham have, at this moment, this ability to… they are winning games [by] not always [playing] brilliantly, but they are getting the job done, which in previous seasons they haven’t. Hopefully, the lads will have learnt a lot from last year’s campaign, especially [the] Juventus game. They played well in those games.”

Despite not signing a single player during the summer transfer window, Spurs are still in every cup competition this season, including the EFL Cup.

Pochettino’s side will travel to bitter rivals Arsenal on Wednesday night with a place in the semi-finals of the League Cup up for grabs. The Gunners defeated their neighbours 4-2 in the league last month and Pochettino will be hoping to get revenge.
