Newcastle United should look to snap up Leicester City defender Christian Fuchs.

Leicester City left-back Christian Fuchs earned some much-needed game time on Tuesday night as his side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Manchester City.

The Leicester Mercury report that the Premier League winner is expected to leave the King Power Stadium when his contract expires at the end of the season.

As reported by the Chronicle Live, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is hoping to sell the club, which could impact the club’s transfer business in January.

Given Ashley’s record of not spending big – Michael Owen still remains the club’s record signing for £17 million from 2005 – it won’t be a surprise if they spend very little in January should a takeover fail to come to fruition.

Therefore, the Magpies should do their utmost best to try and persuade Fuchs to join the club come January or the summer because his quality and experience would be beneficial at St James’ Park.

The addition of Fuchs may seem like a typical Ashley acquisition but looking at the bigger picture, it would help manager Rafa Benitez from utilising makeshift players in that left-back position.

Javier Manquillo and Ciaran Clark have played in that position whilst regular left-back Paul Dummett is the only recognised player challenging for that spot with Archaf Lazaar struggling to even make the matchday squad.

Considering Fuchs’ contract runs out in the summer, United could potentially strike a deal to bring him to the club next month as they aim to maintain their status in England’s top-flight.

After a nervous start to the season, which saw them sitting in the bottom three, Benitez’s side have worked their way up the table in recent weeks as they currently sit four points outside of the drop zone.

Newcastle’s priority is to stay in the Premier League and the club should do everything in their power to add players come January, so they can build a platform for the future and try to revive past glories.
