Emilio Izaguirre walked away from Celtic after winning a seventh Scottish Premiership title with Neil Lennon’s side.

Write off Emilio Izaguirre at your peril.

He may be 33 these days but the former Celtic left-back, who walked away from the Scottish Premiership champions this summer after turning down a contract extension (The Herald), is basking in his new-found hero status back home in Honduras.

After making just 12 league appearances in his final season at Celtic, you could hardly blame the long-serving left-back for chasing a fresh start and a new lease of life.

And it feels rather fitting that Izaguirre, who won seven league crowns in eight years in Glasgow, is spearheading yet another title charge back in his native central America.

Izaguirre returned to where it all began in August when he inked a one-year deal with Motagua. And it’s like he’s never been away.

He was the most unlikely of match-winners as Motagua secured a narrow 2-1 triumph against Progreso on Wednesday night – a result which lifts the Blue Cyclone top of the Honduran league table after nine games.

“I’m happy,” a beaming Izaguirre told Diez after scoring his first goal for Motagua in a decade. “It’s a blessing.”

Celtic might have been disappointed to learn that Izaguirre had no interest in spending another season in the green and white stripes. But no one could begrudge Izaguirre a dream end to a career full of glory.
