Noel Gallagher told BBC Sport that Liverpool have been ‘a bit rubbish’ for most of the season and that’s a reason behind why Manchester United are in their current position.

The Oasis star understands that the rest of the Premier League will get ‘better by 10%’ next season, but he made it clear so will his beloved Manchester City, who took the English crown back off Liverpool.

This time last season, Liverpool were celebrating their Premier League title win, but an injury-hit campaign has seen those at the Etihad cruise to another top prize.

But Gallagher couldn’t help but dig at those on the other side of Manchester, as he suggested that they will be ‘lucky’ to get fourth next season, as he explained why.

“No, because we are going to get better next season, because we’ve had our main striker out for most of the season,” said Gallagher.

“So, as much as everyone else is going to get better by 10%, we’re going to get better too. So, I am not sure United have got a prayer – unless they get Erling Braut Haaland and Harry Kane, and a decent holding midfielder too, but I can’t see it.

“United have only benefitted from Chelsea and Liverpool both being a bit rubbish for most of the season. I think they will be lucky to get fourth next season.”

Whilst Liverpool’s title defence has been pretty abject, whether it’s a valid reason or not, at least they can fall back on the fact that they had their main man out for most of the season.

It’s never easy defending a crown, hence why so very few teams have done it, but come next season Pep Guardiola will find that those across the City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester and other potential surprise challengers will be coming for their throat.

If Manchester City win the title again then it’s not going to be as easy as it has been for 75% of this campaign.
