Andy Gray told beIN SPORTS (21/11/20 at 7:30 pm) that Tottenham duo Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso will struggle to start under Jose Mourinho because they are ‘a bit light’.

Against Manchester City, Mourinho played Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele in the middle of the park, with the Spurs trio all powerful figures.

Whilst Lo Celso came off the bench to score on Saturday, he is more a technical player, just like Winks, but the Argentine has more attacking intent to his game.

Former Sky Sports pundit Gray shared his thoughts on Tottenham’s midfield, which is now mirroring their manager.

“He’s got a midfield where I think it’s a typical Mourinho midfield,” said Gray. “It’s big and it’s powerful.

“It’s not Harry Winks. He doesn’t start with Lo Celso. These are a bit light for him. He has got physical strength in there.

“Hojbjerg, Sissoko and Ndombele. They are all powerful athletes. And he likes that. If you look at the history of his teams. That’s what he likes.

“So, he has got a year in, a team he likes. And you’ll notice when he can, he will pick about eight of them every game.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

    Free

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

Winks has earned more minutes for England in recent months than he has for Spurs in the Premier League.

It’s not a case of Mourinho not rating the Spurs academy product, he just prefers his midfield players to have a more combative and robust nature to their game.

Hojbjerg proved that against Manchester City because he was one of the best players on the pitch, as the summer signing has been thriving since his move to North London.
