West Ham United forward, Michail Antonio, has claimed that Newcastle United ‘spent well’ during the January transfer window, as he told the Footballer’s Football podcast.

The Hammers man added that Newcastle ‘could have easily gone a bit crazy’ last month, but they didn’t and he praised them for that.

The majority of players that Eddie Howe added to his relegation-threatened squad were British players or those with heavy Premier League experience.

Lyon midfielder, Bruno Guimarães, was the only player without any experience in England that arrived.

Whilst there would have been disappointment at Jesse Lingard not being signed up by those from, both Newcastle and West Ham, it was still a healthy window from the Magpies.

Nonetheless, this is what Antonio made of Newcastle’s transfer work and how they did well to reign it in.

“To be fair, I felt like you (speaking to Callum Wilson) guys spent well this January,” said Antonio. “You could have easily splashed the cash and gone a bit crazy.

“You have found experienced Premier League players and in a situation that you are in, that’s why you kind of need.”

The job is done off the field from Newcastle, they have used their financial powers to try and better themselves ahead of their rivals.

Now the task is up to the players and the manager to do the job out on the field of play.

Eddie Howe has a strong enough squad to stay in England’s top-flight, no doubt, but has he been dealt with too much of a mess left by Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley?

Only time will tell, but Newcastle have enough chances, from now until the end of the campaign, to be the richest club in the Premier League and not the Championship.
