Everyone loves a shrewd free transfer. There a few better things to do in the market than land a top-class performer for nothing, and reap the rewards of their fine performances.
In this instance, Everton and Newcastle can pat themselves on the back for the signings of Niels Nkounkou and Ryan Fraser respectively.
Additionally, Arsenal should be commended for snapping up Willian on a free transfer, while Crystal Palace’s swoop for free-agent Nathaniel Clyne was also a shrewd move.
Everton’s Sporting Director Marcel Brands moved to sign Nkounkou after he rejected a deal from Marseille, and what a move it looks.
The Frenchman has only made four appearances so far as Lucas Digne is first-choice. However, Nkounkou’s crossing ability looks superb, as does his athleticism in getting up and down the left flank.

Elsewhere, Steve Bruce did well to land Fraser. The Scotland international scored 16 goals and recorded 25 assists for Bournemouth in the Premier League before rejecting a new contract.
He is yet to start weekly for the Magpies as he builds his fitness up, but to snap up a player of his quality for nothing is truly fine business.
In Arsenal’s case, signing Willian, who enjoyed a trophy-laden seven years at Chelsea, was nifty business. He may be 32, but the Brazilian brings a wealth of experience and know-how to the Emirates.

Lastly, Crystal Palace’s decision to bring Clyne back deserves praise.
With summer signing Nathan Ferguson still not fit, Roy Hodgson needed a new right-back.
Rather than waste money on a temporary fix, he moved to sign a player he worked with at England, who boasts top-level experience having shone for Liverpool over many years.
