Tottenham are now keen to sign Matteo Guendouzi – a move which would cause some controversy in north London if it materialises.

A report from Get French Football News claims that Spurs are among the frontrunners to sign the Marseille No.6 this summer as they aim to strengthen their midfield department.

If a deal does end up progressing, some Tottenham fans may not immediately welcome Matteo Guendouzi.

What’s the story?

Well, the France international rubbed salt in Tottenham’s wounds back in December 2018 after Arsenal recorded a 4-2 win over Spurs in the north London derby.

Guendouzi was captured on camera passionately celebrating Arsenal’s win, as fans filmed him leaning out of a car window, hugging supporters and pumping his fists wildly before he was driven away.

You can see that footage below.

Any new signing has to prove himself worthy of wearing the shirt at Tottenham.

However – after his antics against Spurs in the past – Guendouzi would arguably have more to prove than the usual player, with his reputation amongst Tottenham fans already somewhat stained.

Tottenham face Guendouzi competition

Tottenham are not the only side interested in signing Guendouzi – who Arsenal sold to Marseille for £9m.

According to The Athletic, West Ham would like to bring the 24-year-old to the London Stadium this summer amid doubts over the future of Declan Rice.

The England international could actually be heading to Arsenal – The Times believe Mikel Arteta is willing to spend up to £200m on the West Ham No.41 and Moises Caicedo.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa are also keen – according to the aforementioned story by Get French Football News.

It was Unai Emery who signed Guendouzi for Arsenal, and the Spaniard is keen to reunite with the Frenchman at Villa Park this summer.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as the Marseille playmaker could be heading back to the Premier League.
