West Ham United are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey this month, and they should consider including Pedro Obiang to help conclude a deal.
The Daily Express claim West Ham have seen a £10million offer for England international Shelvey rejected by Newcastle, who are intent on keeping the former Liverpool star until they sign a replacement.
Meanwhile in east London, West Ham have decided to block Pedro Obiang’s move to Serie A side Fiorentina for a fee believed to be in the region of £9.8million according to the Mail – just £200,000 less than West Ham’s Shelvey bid.
With both players remaining at their current clubs and locked in a stalemate, surely it would make sense for West Ham and Newcastle to swap players with both clubs in need of something a little bit different.
Newcastle are on the verge of a relegation battle at the bottom of the Premier League, and Rafa Benitez has already admitted that his squad needs a bit more grit and determination if they are to survive.
At West Ham, Manuel Pellegrini already has that kind of midfielder in both Declan Rice and captain Mark Noble – which is why Obiang has been left to be patient for game time.
Newcastle need a powerhouse in midfield, able to do the ugly side of the game and give the ball to players with flair an attacking prowess. Obiang is exactly that man.
West Ham need a player that can orchestrate attacks from deep, with Rice and Noble more recognised for their hard work and fiery approach to the game that has seen the Hammers become hard to beat of late.
Swapping Obiang and Shelvey is a solution that would work for both parties and with the Hammers rejecting Fiorentina’s bid, perhaps the two clubs could look to sort out an arrangement.
