According to Toby Alderweireld’s family, the centre-back might be planning a move back to Belgium after he leaves Tottenham, having already secured a house in Ekeren.
The centre-back’s father told Gazet van Antwerpen: ‘The house will be ready in the course of 2023, in line with his contract with Tottenham. We’ll see where Toby will play football, at Tottenham, Ajax, an Antwerp club or elsewhere. But the chance that he will play closer to home at the age of 34 is real.’
As Alderweireld’s father mentions, the former Ajax defender’s contract with Spurs expires in June 2023, where the 31-year-old will be 34 years of age.
At that point, his next step will be a crucial one.
He will be engrossed in the twilight of his career, where some players might choose to aim for one last payday, or settle down once again in their homeland.
Tottenham’s No.4 appears to have made plans to choose the latter option having sorted out accommodation in Ekeren, a district in Antwerp where Alderweireld was born.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that the former Atletico Madrid man is bound to move home after his Tottenham contract expires.
According to Spotrac, he earns £80,000-a-week, which is surely enough for him to buy a house in Ekeren without being required to move into it as soon as possible.
However, it is interesting to see that his father thinks Alderweireld’s chances of moving home at 34 are ‘real’ – his post-Spurs career may well take him to familiar surroundings once again.
