Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier’s World Cup gets better and better.
Kieran Trippier has been one of the stars of the World Cup and his performance against Colombia was another terrific one.
The only blot on his match was the inability to prevent Yerry Mina’s header squeezing past him into the net in the 90th minute as the South Americans forced extra time.
Trippier made up for this unfortunate moment by scoring in the penalty shootout with an arrow of a penalty into the tip corner which gave goalkeeper David Ospina no chance.
The Tottenham right-back was a force going forward as he has been all tournament, creating five chances during the game.
By comparison, the rest of the England team combined including substitutes made seven key passes.
On Colombia’s side only Juan Cuadrado came close to Trippier, creating four chances.
Trippier’s tackling was also noteworthy. Whoscored.com notes that Trippier made a team high eight tackles.
This was more than any other player on the pitch, with Colombia’s Wilmar Barrios closest with five.
England’s team as a whole excluding Trippier made 12 tackles, with Trippier making eight himself.
There are other strong right-back displays at World Cup 2018, as France’s Benjamin Pavard also makes a name for himself.
But what Trippier is doing on a game by game basis is quite astounding and the Tottenham star looks like he belongs at this level.
