Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares has been speaking on the Counter Attack podcast, where he made a claim about Newcastle target Mason Mount.
What’s the story?
Well, the 22-year-old has just completed his debut campaign in the Premier League, following a £6.8m move from Benfica in July.
After 22 appearances in England’s top-flight, Tavares has now concluded that Mount was the hardest player he faced this season.
Speaking on the Counter Attack podcast, the Arsenal No.20 said: “Mason Mount of Chelsea. I think the positions, he knows the place he should be to make people feel uncomfortable and with the ball he has too much quality. He has goals, you know, so I think Mason Mount.”
Now, that revelation will be of interest to Newcastle fans, with Eddie Howe supposedly keen to bring Mount to St James’ Park this summer.
Pep Guardiola is also said to be a fan of the England international.
In 53 appearances this season, Mount scored 13 goals for Chelsea, while also providing 16 assists.
From an individual aspect, that is a fantastic return, and we expect more to come from the 23-year-old, who has plenty of time to get even better.
Newcastle will surely struggle to sign Mason Mount
We admire the ambition of Newcastle, but in our view, this pursuit is a step too far.
Mount has openly expressed his love for Chelsea in the past on many occasions, while the Blues have no reason to sell their Cobham graduate.
The west Londoners aren’t in need of the cash, while Mount has also won their Player of the Season award two years running now.
Therefore, we simply cannot see any reason why Thomas Tuchel would willingly give his best player to a Premier League rival.
If Newcastle somehow pull this off, it’s safe to say we’d be very surprised.
