Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng has admitted that he didn’t know anything about Tottenham’s reported interest in him.
German news outlet Bild revealed that Jose Mourinho is interested in the World Cup winner, while also stating that Arsenal are keen.
However, the 32-year-old has now admitted to Suddeutsche Zeitung (via the Evening Standard) that he knew nothing about Spurs’ interest.
Boateng said: ‘Nobody approached me, nobody spoke to me, I didn’t know anything about it, I was surprised.’
In our view, that doesn’t necessarily mean Tottenham’s interest isn’t genuine.
Mourinho and co. might have only discussed a potential swoop for the former Manchester City man internally, and possibly haven’t made their interest known to Boateng or Bayern Munich yet.
The 76-cap Germany international would be an excellent addition to the north Londoners.
Mourinho lacks a true winner in his backline, something which Boateng would help solve.
Few centre-backs currently playing possess a similar trophy cabinet to the Bayern Munich No.17.
He has won the World Cup, eight Bundesliga titles and also the Champions League on two occasions, while also winning numerous other pieces of silverware.
Apart from Toby Alderweireld, Mourinho also lacks real experience in his backline.
Davinson Sanchez is still quite inexperienced and also error-prone, while Joe Rodon and Sergio Reguilon are relatively young defenders.
The ex-Chelsea boss brought some real leaders to the club over the summer in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart – adding Boateng to the pack would be another wise move.
