Arsenal are keeping tabs on Frenkie de Jong and the Barcelona midfielder has already hinted at fancying a move to North London.
Arsenal were quiet during the January transfer window, deciding not to strike any big deals to boost Mikel Arteta’s squad.
The Gunners may instead look to spend big in the summer, just as they did for Declan Rice in 2023.
We may even see another midfielder arrive at the Emirates Stadium this summer with Barcelona ace Frenkie de Jong on the radar.
HITC Football understands that Arsenal are interested in De Jong with Barcelona potentially needing to sell the Dutchman this summer.
Arsenal would have to dig deep to sign De Jong but there has been some encouragement – and we have to go back to 2019 to dig into some intriguing comments…
Frenkie de Jong has already admitted Arsenal interest
De Jong rose to prominence in the 2018-19 season, playing a starring role as Ajax reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Barcelona struck a deal worth up to €86million (£73million) and De Jong has now racked up more than 200 appearances for the Catalan giants.
De Jong did though hint at his interest in signing for Arsenal as the ink dried on his Barcelona move.
De Jong admitted that he wanted to go from Ajax to Arsenal and then to Barcelona, aiming to follow the same path as Marc Overmars in the 1990’s.

“I actually thought Arsenal was pretty beautiful in the past,” said De Jong. “In my mind I have had the following list for a long time: Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona, call it the Marc Overmars route. But yes, if you can go directly to Barcelona, then you are also right where you want to be. Faster than you ever dared to dream,” he added.
De Jong simply couldn’t reject the chance to join Barcelona early in his career, but could still fulfil the ‘Overmars route’ – just in a slightly different order.
The idea of De Jong joining Rice and Martin Odegaard in Arteta’s midfield is enough to get Arsenal fans very excited.
The Dutchman has so much quality and composure on the ball as well as the ability to carry the ball and drive forward from midfield.
Adding that kind of threat alongside Rice and Odegaard could give Arsenal a truly elite midfield for years to come and it’s clear that De Jong has had a move to Arsenal in mind for a while.
Edu and Arteta will be well aware of that and may now have a huge move in the pipeline with De Jong potentially available in a matter of months.£73m superstar has already shared interest in ‘beautiful’ Arsenal transfer, now Edu is eyeing him
The ‘Overmars route’ didn’t quite work out but De Jong clearly believes that a move to North London would be ‘pretty beautiful’ and with Arteta chasing major silverware, now may actually be the perfect time for De Jong to make this huge switch.
