Everton look set to wrap up their first signing under Rafael Benitez.
talkSPORT have reported this week that the Toffees were keen on signing Asmir Begovic.
The big goalkeeper is a free agent after being released by Bournemouth, where he took home £73,000 per week.
And Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano is reporting on Twitter that it’s a done deal and could be announced today at some point.
Good signing?
If and when it is confirmed, yes it’s a good signing by Everton.
Benitez doesn’t need a first-choice goalkeeper and probably won’t for quite a while, with Jordan Pickford impressing at Euro 2020 with England.
But he does need a solid second-in-command and Begovic is a fine option for this sort of role.
The 34-year-old is in a sweet spot in terms of career – old enough to have a wealth of experience, but young enough to still have some years left as a goalkeeper.
The former Chelsea stopper, who won a Premier League title at Stamford Bridge in 2017, is exactly what Everton need and as far as first signings go, Begovic, on a free, is a pretty decent piece of business.
