Tottenham Hotspur rode their luck a little bit this afternoon.

Jose Mourinho’s side moved top of the Premier League after Harry Kane’s 88th-minute winner was enough to secure a 1-0 victory away to West Bromwich Albion.

Tottenham put a drab first-half performance behind them and looked much the better side after the break.

But Gareth Bale – starting in attack with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min – Giovani Lo Celso and Toby Alderweireld passed up good chances to put the visitors ahead.

However, Kane, who had 149 Premier League goals under his belt before kickoff, came to the Lilywhites’ rescue for the umpteenth time in his career.

Here’s how the club’s former chairman Lord Sugar reacted to the win on Twitter:

This is the first time that Tottenham have been top of the Premier League since 2014.

It’s unlikely that they’ll stay there going into next week because both Leicester City and Liverpool have the chance to leapfrog them at the summit today.

But Mourinho’s troops are the dark horses to win the title and it is so often said that scoring late goals, winning ugly games, is the hallmark of potential champions and, well, the North Londoners have been doing just that this season.
