Jan Vertonghen’s return for Tottenham Hotspur could not have been better timed.

The centre-back made his first start for Spurs since September in a crucial Champions League tie against Inter Milan.

He looked like he had not missed a game, settling straight back in alongside long term partner at club and international level Toby Alderweireld.

The phrase ‘world class’ is the highest praise you can attach to a footballer. Vertonghen fits into that category.

He proved his quality at the World Cup this summer with Belgium and last night he was tremendous.

Vertonghen made seven interceptions against Inter, more than any player on the pitch.

He also made five clearances as he helped shut down prolific striker Mauro Icardi.

Tottenham needed Vertonghen back desperately with Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth unavailable.

The Belgian does not always get the praise he deserves.

Last night he showed once again that he is up there with the best defenders in the world. The context that it was his first game in months makes it even better.
