Well, Matt Turner to Arsenal is finally official.
The Gunners have just announced the capture of the USA international from New England Revolution.
Turner is Arsenal’s third senior signing of the transfer window, after Fabio Vieira and with Gabriel Jesus imminent.
However, the 28-year-old’s £7.5 million transfer to the Emirates Stadium was done and dusted much earlier this year.
Here’s what Turner himself has tweeted Arsenal supporters:
The American goalkeeper will act as Aaron Ramsdale’s understudy in North London.
Surely he isn’t at the level to compete with the former Sheffield United stopper and that’s why Arsenal need to be wary about what they decide with Bernd Leno.
Leno is a much more experienced keeper than Turner and someone who can adequately replace Ramsdale, in the event that the latter is unavailable for a length of time.
Turner, however, has no experience of English or European football and therefore it has to be considered a gamble if Mikel Arteta offloads the Germany international with a view toward making Turner the undisputed number two.
Leno played one Premier League game for Arsenal from September onward last season and therefore the former Bayer Leverkusen star could well ask to leave.
But it could and should be considered a gamble if his request is granted.
