A defender in whom Wolverhampton Wanderers are said to be interested (Marca) has refused to hide his desire to one day play in the Premier League and admitted that Wolves are a great club.

Wolves are just one of the clubs being linked with César Montes, the Monterrey centre-back, along with Sevilla and Valencia.

And it is claimed he could be available from around €8 million (£7.2m) this summer.

But while Montes has insisted that he is not actively seeking a transfer, he is confident that he is ready to compete for a club like Wolves.

“The truth is that (Wolves) is a great club,” Montes told TUDN. “It is doing things very well, it has a great coach (Nuno Espirito Santo), it went up to (the First Division), he has made them fight in Europe.

“Raúl (Jiménez, a Mexico teammate of Montes) has grown a lot under Nuno’s orders and now he is an important player for the Premier (League) and for the national team.

“It is a top league, it competes with the best, I do not hide the illusion. It does not depend on me, it depends on other factors. What depends on me is to give myself on the field, give everything for (Monterrey) and, if any team bets on me, may I have that peace of mind that I will give my best as I defend this shirt.

“If it happens, I’ll go away calmly that I’ve always done my best for this (Monterrey) shirt. How can I be disappointed if I don’t go? On the contrary I am in a phenomenal, extraordinary club that has given me everything; it is the current champion. Monterrey represents my home.

“I am ready to play (in a major league), to demonstrate, so I do not hide my illusion. There are also many rumours, that does not depend on me, it does not take me out of the focus that I have here in Monterrey.

“I like to compete to the maximum always, to give myself to the maximum and the Premier League is the top league so, of course, I would love it. The team that bets on me to stay calm that I will give the maximum. They are top leagues (where the best compete), there they are the best players and that makes one grow. My goal is clear and I work for that day by day.”

Although there is no suggestion yet that an approach has or will be made by Wolves, Montes’s signing would strengthen an area in which Nuno’s side are arguably short, with Willy Boly, Conor Coady and Max Kilman the only specialist centre-backs to feature there last season.

Roman Saiss and Leander Dendoncker can also provide cover, but neither Ryan Bennett nor Roderick Miranda are expected to stay at Molineux following their recent loans away.

23-year-old Montes stands at around six-feet-five-inches tall and is aggressive in his defensive approach.
